BETSY FOSS HOUSE, Arch Street east of
Third, where the first American Flag was
designed and made.
At the time of the Revolution, John Ross
kept an upholsterer's shop. He died in the
Continental Army and his widow continued
the business. In May, 1776, Geo. Washington
and a committee employed Betsy Ross to
make a sample flag, which was adopted as
the National Emblem. At the time she
made the flag she was 24 years old.
