Facts About Block Island
Names
When first discovered it was inhabited by Narragansett In-
dians. It was first known as Manisses (Little God's Island).
1524
Called Claudia by Varrazzeno, a French explorer, who
visited the Island in that year.
1614
Adrian's Eyland, or Block Island, after Adrian Block, a
Dutch explorer of 1614.
1672
New Shoreham (otherwise Block Island) is the name which
appears in the town charter of that date.
Location
South of Rhode Island, thirty. miles from Newport and twelve
miles from land.
Area
About twenty-five square miles. It is approximately seven
miles long by three and a half wide in the widest part.
Fresh Water
About one hundred fresh water ponds.
Temperature
Averages 75° F. from June to October.
Bathing
Waters are the warmest to be found on New England coast.
