Was born in Co. Kerry 24th June, 1850. Entered
Army 1871. Major General 1896. Commanded
Khartoum Expedition 1898 (received thanks of
Parliament and £30,000, and raised to the Peer-
age). Chief of Staff South African War 1900-1902,
and General (received Viscounty, thanks of Parlia-
ment, and £50,000). Commander-in-Chief India
1902-7. H. M's. Agent and Consul General in
Egypt since 1911. Was created Earl 1914.
