whose valour and fortitude have won him im-
perishable renown, was born 8th April, 1875, and
w succeeded his uncle, Leopold II., on the 17th
December, 1909. His Consort, Queen Elizabeth,
whom he married in October, 1900, was of the
Royal House of Bavaria, a worthy and constant
helpmate, refusing to be separated from her
gallant husband, come weal, come woe, and
untiring in her efforts to ameliorate the suffer-
ings of their sick and wounded soldiers. Their
eldest son, Prince Leopold, Duke of Brabant,
was born 3rd November, 1901, while Prince
Charles was born oth October, 1903, and
Princess Marie on 4th August, 1906.
