This is the type of gun which constitutes
the chief weapon of our coast defense. The
new 16-inch rifle which has recently been de-
signed by the Ordnance Department of our
army, and with which our coast defense sta-
tions are now being equipped, has an effective
range of 27 1/3 miles—a distance equal to that
from Governor's Island to Tarrytown, New
York. It' throws a projectile which weighs over
2,400 pounds, and is six feet in length by 16
inches in diameter. It is driven out of the
gun by the explosion of 900 pounds of smoke-
less powder. The barrel of this gun is of the
wire wound type which is especially designed
to resist the bursting stress of the powder.
Every time this gun is fired, it costs the Gov-
ernment $1,680.00.
