John Milton, after Shakespeare, the greatest of
English poets, was born in Bread Street, Cheapside,
London, on December 9th, 1608. At Cambridge he
excelled in English composition and Latin verse.
After leaving the university he spent six years in
retirement, studying classical literature, philosophy,
mathematics, and music, when he wrote “ Arcades,
"L'Allegro, “Il Penseroso," "Lycidas”. and
" Comus. In 1652 he became totally blind, in 1667,
however, was published that most beautiful work
* Paradise Lost," and in 1671 " Paradise Regained.'
Milton died November 8th, 1674, and was interred in
St. Giles's, Cripplegate, London.
