LANDING OF THE SWEDES AND FINNS
1638 to 1938
The commemorative stamp was
sold and cancelled only in Wilming-
ton, Delaware on June 27, 1938. After
that date other post offices sold this
stamp. 1 This stamp carries
a reproduction of the painting by
Stanley M. Arthurs of Wilmington,
showing Peter Minuit, leader of the
first expedition, meeting the Indians
and negotiating for the purchase of
New Sweden. The purchase started
a chain of historic events, the first
link of which is the motif for the in-
ternational celebration this June 27,
1938.
The first printing of the Stamp was
witnessed by representatives from
Sweden, Finland and the United States
on May 25. This is the first time
Wilmington has had a first day stamp
sale. The only other first day stamp
sale in Delaware was held in New
Castle in 1932 in honor of William
Penn. ... The actual landing by the
Swedes was on March 29, 1638.
