Back:
Most powerful icebreaker in the world is
the new 10,000 horsepower, $10,000,000 coast
guard "Mackinaw," shown here as it cleared
a passage through the Soo Locks, the St.
Mary's River and the Straits of Mackinac to
break out a convoy of four seagoing freighters
in the open water of Lake Michigan. The
"Mackinaw" is powered by six diesel en-
gines and has three propellors, one of them
in the bow. Her specially-built prow can
climb up on ice floes, 15 to 18 inches thick,
and force a passage.
