VIRGINIA CITY, NEVADA
FROM COMBINATION SHAFT HEADFRAME
Looking northwest from this shaft which
descended to the Sutro Tunnel, one sees the
crumbling remains of a once-thriving mining
town, sprawled on the barren eastern slope of
Mt. Davidson. Thousands of workers toiled
and died beneath the city streets while mining
the fabulously rich silver ore of the famous
Comstock Lode, from 1859 to the early 1900's.
