Independence Hall
Beginning with the Second Continental Congress, the Philadelphia State
House (which people began to call “Independence Hall” in the 1820's)
became the hotbed of Revolution. It was here during the Second Congress
that Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, James Wilson and Thomas
Jefferson first appeared in Congress. Planned by Andrew Hamilton and
Edmund Woolley and constructed in the 1730's, it was here that
Washington was given command of the Continental Army, the Declara-
tion of Independence was signed and the Constitution was framed. Today
it is the centerpiece of Independence National Historical Park.
