THE NORTH BRIDGE AT CONCORD
The Battle of Concord had its focus at the village's North Bridge
April 19, 1775. It was about 10:00 a.m. when the British regulars
reached that point and found the provincial militiamen ready
and waiting. Surprisingly, colonial musketry stunned the
otherwise well-disciplined Redcoats who broke and ran in a
panic. It was nearly high noon before the bumbling Lieutenant
Colonel Francis Smith, the British commander, was able to
regroup his forces, only to discover that swelling ranks of angry
Americans were about to surround his hapless troops. He
quickly loaded his wounded soldiers aboard commandeered
carriages and began the now-famous retreat to Boston. Joined by
reinforcements along the way, he nonetheless suffered heavy
losses at the hands of Minutemen employing guerilla tactics.
