BRITISH RETREAT FROM CONCORD
Following the Battle of Lexington in the early hours of April 19,
1775, the British Redcoats resumed their march to Concord to
the accompaniment of fife and drum! Upon reaching the village,
the British conducted a search for colonial arms. A few cannon
were found and destroyed along with some tents, tools, and
provisions. The climax of the Battles of Lexington and Concord
occurred at Concord's North Bridge, where Yankee muskets
took their toll of Redcoats and forced the badly shaken British to
begin a slow retreat to the sanctuary of Boston and the British
naval guns in Boston's harbor. Throughout the retreat – a
return march along what is known today as Battle Road — the
American militiamen continually harassed them from houses
and from behind rocks and trees which lined the route.
