ROUTE OF FORCE
The attack on the Yankee fortification at Bunker Hill began with
an artillery barrage from British gunships laying at anchor in the
Charles River. At noon, with favorable tides, 2300 Redcoats
were ferried across the river from Boston. Their orders were to
sweep the hill. Boston rooftops sagged with the weight of
thousands of spectators who watched the incredible battle
unfold. After repeated assaults by General Howe's Redcoats, and
with their supplies of powder totally spent, the patriots were
forced to abandon their crude fort and retreat. Although the
British were the victors, Yankee morale was bolstered by the
proud showing. The Battle of Bunker Hill was the first major
contest between the American and British armies. It proved that
the Yankees, in spite of hasty organization and meager training,
could stand and fight effectively against a vastly superior force of
professional British soldiers.
