TRAINING STATION--GROUP OF MIDDIES. The prin-
cipal training station for enlisted men and for apprentices is
at Newport. “Middies" is an abbreviation of midshipmen,
a title in the U. S. Navy substituted for naval cadet, and
ranking next below ensign. The term is derived from the
fact that in the British navy the cadets were given quarters
amidships.
