The Roosevelt Dam is 284 feet high, and
contains 342,000 cubic yards of masonry. The
reservoir covers an area of 16,320 acres and has a
storage capacity of 12,840,000 acre feet. The
spillway is 400 feet long and is 220 feet above the
stream bed. The stored water is released as need-
ed into the river channel which it follows to a point
about two miles below the confluence of the Salt
and Verde rivers, where the Granite reef diversion
o dam diverts the water into a canal on each side of
w the river. Large sluicing gates prevent the heavier
sediment from entering the canal and the lighter
and finer particles are carried on to the land where
they serve a useful purpose in perpetuating the
fertility of the soil.
