BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA
This desert town was once the outfitting point for Death
Valley expeditions. Barstow was the center of gold and silver
mining in the 1890's when the present ghost town of Calico
was in its heyday. The town, located where highways 66,
91, and 466 meets, enjoys a brisk tourist trade. Here is
located the Santa Fe Diesel shops. The surrounding desert
offers in limited or unlimited quantities a large majority of
all metallic and non-metallic elements and minerals . . . M.P.
