WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT was born in Cincinnati,
Ohio, Dec. 15th, 1857, and graduated from Yale University
with the class of 1878. In 1892, he was made U. S. Circuit
Judge, attaining the rank of Senior Circuit Judge the following
year. In 1900, he became President of the U. S. Philippine
Commission, and in 1901, was chosen as first civil governor
of the Philippine Islands. He was appointed Secretary of
War in 1904, and in 1908, as the regular nominee of the
Republican Party, was elected President of the U. S., receiving
321 electoral votes.
