was born 19th June, 1861. Joined 7th Hussars
1885; served in Soudan 1898, South Africa 1899,
with great distinction. Lieut.-Colonel 17th
Lancers 1901-1903, Inspector-General Cavalry,
India, 1903-1906, Major-General 1904, Director of
Military Training 1906-1907, Direntor of Staff
Duties at Army Headquarters 1907-1909, Chief of
Staff 1909-1912, General Officer Commanding
Aldershot 1912, Commander of 1st Division
Expeditionary Forces in the great War of 1914,
and highly praised in despatches by the
Commander-in-Chief.
