The Eiffel Tower, stands close to the seine banks opposite the Trocadero. It is the highest monument in the world, 984 feet high, and was constructed by M. Eiffel, the enginer, in 1887 - 1889. The material is iron, the four bases forming a quadrangle 142 yards square. There is a restaurnat on the first platform (190 feet) and a glass pavilion, capable of holding 800 people, on the third platform, 904 feet above ground level. The view from teh summit in clear weather covers a radius of 55 miles. |
