Coming up to the Dock. The approach to New York
City trom the bay presents a sight that has no parallel in
any other city in the world. Travelers arriving for the
first time are profoundly impressed by the natural scenery
as well as the wonderful creations of human hands. Passing
the gateway to the American metropolis, The Narrows,
where the bay is barely a mile wide, a succession of
interesting scenes comes into view. The green ramparts
of the several forts, behind which lurk powerful batteries;
Robin's Reef Lighthouse ; Bedloe's, Ellis and Governor's
Islands; Brooklyn Bridge, and near by the Navy Yard.
Attractions multiply as the steamer proceeds, and attention
is now concentrated on the imposing commercial, municipal
and office buildings, as the far-famed “sky scrapers” loom
up at close range,
