Works No. 9 may indirectly trace its origin
back to 1872, although the Pittsburgh Plate
Glass Company first took over in 1895. Men
are yet living who helped erect the buildings
and operate the crude furnace from which the
first glass was cast in the summer of 18741G
Now one of the largest and most modern facCANE
tories anywhere for making glass, the present
plant covers approximately 85 acres 7 of
ground, with about 20 acres under roof, and5 6
employs around 2,000 people; the grounds
rival a college campus for beauty and order-
liness.
