Alcatraz Island is situated one
mile to the east of Golden Gate,
whose entrance it guards. It is
one-third of a mile long and one-
tenth of a mile wide. Is irregu-
lar in shape and contains about
12 acres, and is mainly composed
of solid rock. Heavy guns are
mounted on all sides as well as
on the top. The Island is being used at the
present time as a military prison and an im-
migration station.
