The Naval Air Station is located twelve miles
south of the city and occupies 10,000 acres of
land. It cost approximately $25,000,000. Rushed
to completion, the giant school for fliers began
training men on May 5, 1941, only ten months
after the site was only a wasteland of sand dunes
and sea grasses.
