Gold was discovered in this beautiful little foothill
canyon in 1848, and by 1849 there were more than
4,500 miners prospecting the area. When the placer
gold was nearly gone, rich gold-bearing veins of
quartz were discovered and the boom started
all over again. Today this picturesque main street
still has many of its original buildings. Mark Twain's,
“CELEBRATED JUMPING FROG OF CALA-
VERAS COUNTY” took place here.
