Genoa /Jupiter No. 12
Railroad Museum, Old Sacramento, California
This vintage 1872 Locomotive has lived two lives, one as a wood
burner on the famous Comstock Railroad and a showpiece symbol
of America's 1st Transcontinental Railroad link-up. Its first career,
as Genoa it faithfully hauled passengers between Carson City and
Virginia; its second phase, as Jupiter the Central Pacific Loco-
motive which met the Union Pacific at Promontory, Utah, May 10,
1869. It has been displayed before millions in New York, Chicago,
Sacramento, Oakland and Promontory. The GENOA/JUPITER is an
example of a machine that became a symbol.
