“Chariot Racing in Tournament Park,” Lawry’s Foods
1979 Rose Parade Float, is a nostalgic recreation of the
Roman chariot races originally held following the Rose
Parade in 1904. The 50-foot float depicts two lifesize
chariots, made from split redwood and eucalyptus bark
embellished with orange marigold petals, drawn by two
teams of four horses hitched abreast and racing over a
carpet of more than 30,000 roses ablaze with color. In
contrast, white camellias form the hedge posts which
anchor the four corners of the float. The horses are
decorated with white carnation petals and red Ti leaves
with manes and tails of palm fiber and pampas plumes,
while the exotic tree canopy is alive with thousands of
Sonia and Carina Roses.
