Cayucos is an Indian name applied to a small fishing
boat, that is like cance and often made of skins.
These were found at the mouth of a small creek and
when schooner's bad pommerce along the California
coast with these boats the vicinity became known as
Cayucos. James Cass built a house here, (it still stands
at the north end of town) and built a wharf in 1870.
Because of his well directed efforts the town grew.
The present pier is only a part of the old that was
destroyed by storm. Today the town is a resort town
with stores, motels and fishing supply shops ... M.P.
