| Built in 1836, with 37 acres inside the compound, it is one of the largest Penal Institutions in the United States, affording maximum security. Although this establishment is closed to the visiting public, a view of inside the compound can be had from the hill on Capitol Avenue, just east of the Penitentiary. |
