DON'T BE DECEIVED
By any statements that great savings have been effected in the State Printing office. An amazing
array of figures on a technical subject ingeniously juggled by a shrewd politician should be looked
on with suspicion Mr. Duniway receives the same fees as his predecessor, J. R. Whitney. The
work has increased; and his emoluments have been greater.
I have been employed in the State Printing office since 1876—for over 32 years—in every capacity,
and foreman for upwards of 20 years, notwithstanding every State Printer for 30 years has been a
Republican, and the emoluments of the State Printer for the last year of his term will probably
amount to more money than I have received in wages during the 32 years that I have been employed
on the work. I have certainly been in a position to know what the profits have been.
In regard to my declaration that the office yields approximately $100,000 in a four-year term, I
propose to verify the truthfulness of my assertion; if elected, by submitting a detailed statement of
the Receipts and Expenditures to the legislative assembly, regardless of whether the office is placed
on a flat salary or not. My reputation for character, truth and veracity, can be vouched for by the
leading citizens in the Capital City, where I have lived for over 45 years.
If there is an office in the State of Oregon that should be non-political, it is the office of State
Printer. Believing that I should receive some reward for long continued service, I ask your support
as a matter of Justice.
Yours very truly,
JAMES E. GODFREY
