This photograph shows the old Santa Fe
Trail west of Dodge City, leading down to
Cimarron Crossing of the Arkansas River.
The ruts have never been disturbed since
they were cut by the Overland freight
wagons. The trail was from one hundred
to two hundred feet wide for the entire
distance of about eight hundred miles; and
bull teams were driven four, six and eight
wagons abreast as a precaution against at-
tack. Army engineers have proclaimed the
Santa Fe Trail (which had not a single
bridge from beginning to end) the best
natural road of its length in the world.
