San Francisco is the metropolis of California, its
population by the latest census exceeding 400,000. The voyager will
here see much to attract, and two weeks or more can easily be passed
in the city or suburbs or in going about California, a wonderland of
climate, fruit and flowers. The mean annual temperature in
San Francisco is 56 degrees, a perpetual summerland for residents
accustomed to the extremes of heat and cold of other climes. The
city has the best all-year climate for those not in the extremes of
delicate health, and it is undoubtedly one of the great summer and
winter resorts of the world. Among the city's many attractions
are the beautiful Presidio Reservation, the famous Cliff House and
Seal Rocks, Golden Gate Park of 1,400 acres, picturesque Chinatown,
famous Nob Hill, interesting water front, the State Mining Museum
and United States Mint. The State University is at Berkeley,
across the bay, and the adjoining cities of Berkeley, Oakland,
Alameda and San Rafael have many attractions. A popular local
trip is to the summit of Mount Tamalpais, a two hours' ride from
San Francisco, which includes a pretty bay ride and a wonderful
scenic journey up the steep mountain side.
