The world famous Barter Theatre is America's oldest,
longest-running professional repertory theatre. It was
founded during the Great Depression of the 1930's on
the theory that residents of the beautiful, abundant
Southern Highlands would barter food for first-rate
professional entertainment. Designated in 1946 The
State Theatre of Virginia, Barter has had hundreds of
plays, thousands of actors (many famed today) and
millions of steady patrons and visitors from all over
the globe as part of its rich tradition.
