Next to the railroad station at Gold Strike may be
found a Llama herd. The Llama grows to a height
of about 4 feet and is related to the camel but has no
hump and looks more like a long-legged, long-necked
sheep. Like the camel, it has been domesticated and
used as a beast of burden, but when carrying a load
it travels at a very slow rate. At this Western Play-
town the Llama is used as a riding animal for chil-
dren. The Llamas are very abundant in parts of Co-
lombia, Peru, Bolivia, and Chile. In the west they
have never replaced the horse or burro as a pack
animal ... M.P.
