The new Union Station, Kansas City, opened to
the public in 1914, cost approximately six million
dollars for the structure alone, It covers an area of
5.5 acres. The front of the main building is 510 feet
long, with an express building on the west extending
a distance of 1,000 feet. The apex of the roof is 126
feet above the street. The station fronts on a plaza
and public square. No baggage, express or mail
wagons use the plaza level, roadways for that pur-
pose leading to the basement below. All trucking to
and from trains is done in the subways underneath
the building and plaza. The exterior of the building
is gray stone. The roof is of concrete slabs and the
interior finish is of marble, tile and stone.
The entire Terminal project, of which the passen-
ger station is a part, cost approximately fifty million
dollars.
