Additional Details:
Canal Street in New Orleans is America's widest business thoroughfare and is the dividing line between the old city and the new. It is 171 feet wide. The neutral ground and sidewalks are paved with marble with deep pink borders. The lighting system is one of the longest of its kind in the world, comprising 109 standards at 100 feet intervals. On the columns are seals of France, Spain, Confederate States and the United States, representing the four governments which have had jurisdiction over New Orleans since the city was founded in 1718. Canal Street was named from the waterway, since filled in, intended to connect the Mississippi River and Lake Pontchartrain. New Orleans - America's most interesting city.
