From the ocean inlet, 12 miles south of Day-
tona Beach, one may drive north along this nat-
ural speedway for a distance of 23 miles. At low
tide the beach is 500 feet wide and because
of the peculiar coquina shell formation the sand
packs as hard and smooth as a paved road. It
was here famous drivers established many world
speed records. In 1922, Sig Haughdahl, who now
lives at Daytona Beach, established a world speed
record 180.27 miles an hour.
