While much of Death Valley's horror
is exaggeration, its evil name is partially
deserved. It has been a huge cauldron
in which the desert sun has often cooked
up a bitter kettle for man and beast.
It is a strange even sinister valley that
sinks pot like in the desert. Around it
rises high ridges of slag mountains, the
Panamints on the West, with a 12,000
foot altitude, and to the East the Terra
Cotta Funeral Range, 10,000 feet high.
The floor of the valley is 284 feet below
sea level.
