The civilized world first heard of the Grand
Canyon in 1540. When it was discovered by a
detachment of Coronado's expedition into Tusa-
yan, or Hopi Land. Pedro de Castaneda, the
historian of Coronado's forces, says “It seemed
to be more than three or four leagues in an air
line across to the other bank of the stream"
which flowed below, and that they spent three
days on this bank looking for a passage down to
the river, but found it impossible to descend.
