The summits of the San Francisco Peaks are
elevated nearly 13,000 feet above the sea, yet
only 6,000 feet above Flagstaff. The apex of
Humphreys' Peak, the only one practical for
the tourist, is a little more than ter, miles from
the town. The outlook from this peak is one
of the noblest of mountain views, commanding
a recognizable territory of 75,000 square miles,
the main features of which are as follows:
directly north, the Grand Canyon 50 miles
away; and topping that, the Buckskin Moun-
tains 40 miles farther distant; to the right, the
Navaho Mountains near the Colorado State line
200 miles; in the Northeast, the Painted
Desert; to the South, the Superstition Moun-
tains near Phoenix 160 miles distant; in the
Southwest, Broadshaws Mountains, 140 miles,
etc.
