The entrance to the Great San Joaquin Valley
is by way of Tehachapi Pass, at an altitude of
4000 feet. Ten miles beyond the Pass is the fa-
mous loop. Here a complete circle is made by the
railroad. The length of the loop is 3795 feet, the
altitude at the crossing over the tunnel is 3034 feet;
the altitude at the tunnel is 2956 feet. Rapidly
descending, the San Joaquin Valley is entered at
Bakersfield. The Valley is 32,000 square miles in
extent, and is the granary of the State.
