This steamship is the principal vessel of the White Star fleet, being one of the largest boats in the world, is 710 feet long, 75 1/2 feet bean. Speed 17 1/2 knots. It was launched in 1903 and is engaged in the Transatlantic service between Liverpool and New York. The Baltic on January 23, 1909, received a wireless message from the Republic calling for help as it had collided with another steamer during a fog and was gradually sinking with about 800 passengers on board. The Baltic went to the rescue, and within a very few hours had all he passengers transferred from the Republic without the loss of a single life. Within a short time after the last passenger was transferred the Republic sank beneath the waves.
