Monument Avenue–The main street of
Old Bennington. The Church of Christ
in the foreground. Its predecessor, the
first church built in Vermont, stood on
the green to the left of the picture. The
Walloomsac Inn stands directly opposite.
Next to the church looking up the avenue
stood the Ethan Allen house and farther
up the General Hospital and the Cata-
mount Tavern. On the Monument Grounds
were located the Continental Store House,
the State House, the Pillory, and Whip-
ping Post of early days.
