UNIVERSITY HALL AND
VAN WICKLE GATES-BROWN UNIVERSITY
Providence, Rhode Island
During the Revolutionary War, the hall was
used as barracks, hospital, and horse stable
for American and French troops. It was
designated a National Shrine in 1963. The
Van Wickle Gates are opened only twice
each academic year: in September during
convocation ceremonies, and in June at the
commencement procession.
