WAR CORRESPONDENTS' MEMORIAL
Gathland State Park
near Boonsboro Washington Co., Md.
This National Monument is under the supervision of the
Maryland Dept. of Forests and Parks. It was built in 1885
by Geo. Alfred Townsend, famous author and war corres-
pondent of the Civil War period. Located in Washington Co.
along the famous Appalacian Trail that stretches from Maine
to Georgia. Gath was the pen name of Townsend, from
which Gathland originates. This Arch is the only monument
in the world erected to the memory of War Correspondents.
