WAR CORRESPONDENTS MEMORIAL
GATHLAND STATE PARK
BURKITTSVILLE, MARYLAND
The State Park covers 135 acres a mile west of
Burkittsville at Crampton Gap. This was the moun-
taintop estate of George Townsend, noted Civil
War journalist who built the monument in this
picture to war correspondents, and it stands at
the summit of South Mountain.
