MAINE SEAFOODS FESTIVAL
Rockland, Maine - August 5, 6, 7, 1955
The Maine Seafoods Festival,
the festival in the old seaport city
of Rockland where real Down
Easters boil tens of thousands of
pounds of delicious Maine lobster
for festival guests the first week-
end in August each year.
The mammoth boiling kettles
shown on the reverse side are the
largest in the world. Twenty feet
in length and 48 inches in diame-
ter, the two kettles can boil 1600
pounds of Maine lobsters every 20
minutes. During Festival days,
crews of skilled lobster cooks keep
the giant kettles steaming early
and late to feed the thousands who
make the Maine Seafoods Festival
their Mecca.
The kettles are Utility Gas fired
with burners having an output of
one million BTU's per hour. It
takes 1,000 gallons of water and
200 pounds of salt, brought to a
furious boil to get ready for
cooking. Then, eight huge wooden
crates are packed with 200 lob-
sters each and lowered into the
water by block and tackle. Six-
teen minutes later, they emerge,
glistening red, hot and tasty.
Seconds later, they are on the
serving lines and visitors to the
Maine Seafoods Festival in Rock-
land, Maine are being served the
grandést seafood feast of all
The festival is always the first
weekend in August. In 1955, it
will be Friday, Saturday and
Sunday, August, 5-6-7.
