TUSCARORA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, NEAR MARTINSBURG, W. VA. This quaint sanctuary was
built in 1803 and took the place of an older church which is said to have been the first place of public
Christian worship west of the Blue Ridge. The congregation and the original building date back possibly
as far as 1720, half a century before Martinsburg existed. Services are still held here each Lord's Day.
The church is located two miles west of Martinsburg along Tuscarora Creek, named for the Tuscarora Indians
who inhabited this section of the Valley. In the Indian language "Tuscarora" means "hemp gatherers.'
