Taken from an original painting by the cowboy artist, statesman, and poet, ex-Senator Lewis . Larsen of Utah. German Shepherd, a working dog; commonly known as Police dogs. Originated in Germany during the 19th century. Average height is 22 to 26 inches. They were introduced into the United States in 1912, and gained great fame during World Wars I and II, as patrol and messenger dogs.
