The Old Exchange Building is one of the
most historic sites in Charleston. Pirates were
confined in its bastile in 1718. Later it was
used as military headquarters. Here, during
the Revolutionary War, the Provincial Con-
i gress set up the first Independent Government
in America. In 1818 it was the Post Office.
