BIRD SANCTUARY
Avery Island, Louisiana
Here, in world-famous Jungle Gardens,
is a bird sanctuary created by E. A.
McIlhenny, who found seven young egrets, then
almost extinct, and raised them in a cage, more
than 50 years ago. They were freed but returned
every year in increasing numbers. The population
is now over 100,000.
